Anne
Smenos
May 2, 1923 — Nov 18, 2024
Plainfield
Anne Smenos of Plainfield Illinois died peacefully on Monday November 18, 2024 at the tender age of 101. Anne leaves an indelible impression on those who called her Mom, Yia Yia , Aunt, Cousin, Friend, and Teacher. Her joyful spirit, radiant smile and compassionate heart captivated those who had a chance to know her over the years.
Anne was born on May 2, 1923 to John and Fofo Pappas in Chicago, Illinois. The family moved to Cicero Illinois where she graduated from Morton East High School. From there she completed her college education earning a Bachelors Degree in Library Sciences at Rosary College.
After college she returned to Morton East and West High Schools and was a teacher and librarian for 38 years beginning in 1945 and ending in 1983. She felt quite at home since she had graduated from Morton in 1941. Her passion was working with children with a special interest in teaching them to love reading. She had treasured memories from her time at Morton and cherished the lifelong friendships she made.
During this time, Anne was also President of the Morton Scholarship League for several years. It is an organization that provided a weekly stipend to students with passing grades that needed financial assistance. Over the years this organization has provided and helped hundreds of students achieve academic success.
She also was the President of the Iota Chapter of Delta Kappa Gamma, an international organization that promotes professional growth for women educators and excellence in education. She was a member for over 60 years.
She however, could not stay retired and subsequently went to work for CD Peacock Jewelers for 18 years and finally retired in 2016. She loved the people that she worked with and the customers that she met along the way.
She is survived by her son Brian (Ginny), daughter Daria, grandchildren Chris and Ali (Ryan), great grandchildren Oaklyn and Owen, numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. May her memory be eternal.
In lieu of flowers the family requests that donations be made in Anne's name to Alzheimer's Association (www.alz.org).
