Obituary

Athanasios (Tom) Sinioris, 81, died October 16, 2026, following an extended illness. He founded and was CEO of Croissant de Paris serving hotels, restaurants, and airlines nationwide. As former owner of Villa Sweden restaurant in Chicago’s Andersonville community, he frequently welcomed the King of Sweden among patrons. Early in his career, he managed the Vie de France French-inspired bakery and café chain in Chicago and Northbrook, Illinois locations. His career and the national reach of his commercial bakery made him well-respected in the food industry.

He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Marie Kuchuris Sinioris, former president of Arc Ventures of Rush Medical Center in Chicago, and by a son, George Paul. As long-time residents of River Forest where he coached youth soccer, Tom and his family were members of the River Forest Tennis Club where he enjoyed athletic and competitive—but amiable—tennis games. Friends called him “the one to beat” in cards and backgammon.

A lifelong passion for food and gardening shared with Marie and George led to purchasing a farm and small vineyard in northwest Indiana, where they moved after leaving River Forest. His easy hospitality and generosity enhanced meals shared with all ages of family and friends, who often left gatherings clutching an abundance of his garden vegetables. Fresh-picked and plump tomatoes or zucchini were essential to his flavorful Mediterranean fare, which he prepared out of pure love of his Greek roots.

He was born and raised in Sourpi/Volos, Greece, familiar with its ancient hills and olive groves under sunny, azure skies. As a young man in Athens, he qualified as two-stripe Evzone sergeant and expert equestrian astride Arabian horses within King Constantine’s elite Palace Guard. After receiving a degree in accounting from the Business College of Athens, he worked as an accountant in the Athens division of Scandinavian Airlines (SAS) before transitioning to Chicago in 1969.

He was also a cantor in the Greek Orthodox services. Family and friends, who affectionately called him Thanasi or Tom, gathered around wherever he sang. They were mesmerized on shared trips to Greece when he and two brothers sang soft ballads—the strains of their blended voices adrift in the warm night air along the shoreline of the Aegean Sea.

Tom, whose siblings, Marina, John, and Stathis, pre-deceased him, is brother-in-law of Paul Kuchuris (Priscilla) and uncle to numerous nieces and nephews.
