Obituary

Carmine Napolitano, 92, of Westchester, passed away at home on March 13, 2023. He is survived by his loving wife of almost 70 years, Jenny "Jane" Napolitano, daughter Melina Mann and her husband Richard of LaGrange, son Frank Napolitano and his wife Jacqueline of Hinsdale and Naples, Florida.

He is also survived by his grandchildren Jennifer Osborne and her husband Mark of Carmel, Indiana, Nicole Corcoran and her husband Brian of Noblesville, Indiana, Carmine Napolitano and fiancée Cassie Caveney of Morris, IL, and Julia Napolitano and husband Nick Dunn of Chicago. He also leaves behind his beloved great-grandchildren, Gretchen and Mabel Corcoran and Francesca and Samuel Osborne. He survived by his brother Giulio, Italy, brother-in-law Mario Pizza (Alfreda) of Evanston, sister-in-laws Rosetta Catanese of Westchester, and Angelina Napolitano of Italy, and many nieces and nephews.

Born on June 27, 1930 in Scissiano, Italy to Francesco and Carmela Napolitano, he is predeceased by them, and his siblings Felice, Lena and Vincenzo. Carmine was trained to be a teacher in Italy before immigrating to Chicagoland with his new wife Jenny in the early 1950s. Once here, he worked at Ryerson Steel, where he was proudly employed until his retirement in 1984.  He enjoyed travel with Jenny, including February's in Florida for several years. However, he spent much of his retired free time as a beloved caregiver to his grandchildren, serving as after school driver, chef and entertainment.

Born to a farming family in southern Italy, he was a lifelong gardener, ultimately cultivating the largest fruit and vegetable garden in the western suburbs, according to his unbiased family. He jarred tomatoes and many other foods for use year-round. He was also an amateur winemaker, passing on these hobbies to his son, Frank.

Carmine, affectionately known as Poppo by his family, loved children and was happiest in the presence of his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He was always truly present for the children in his life and delighted in their joy. He was a thoughtful listener who remembered small details about all of his loved ones until his very last few weeks. But most of all, he was a devoted husband and father whose absence will be felt sorely by his family who loved and admired him dearly.

A visitation will be held on Saturday, March 18, 2023 at Divine Providence Catholic Church, 2550 Mayfair Ave., Westchester at 9:00 a.m. immediately followed by a funeral mass at 10:00 a.m. Entombment will follow the mass at Queen of Heaven, Hillside.
