Charles Michael Dutton, Sr., “Chuck” or “Charlie”, age 86, of Warrenville, and formerly of Oak Park, passed away on October 22, 2026, surrounded by his devoted wife and children. Chuck was the beloved husband of Kay (Moore) and father to Mike (Lisa), Ruth, Scott, Kathy (Kris) Amen, Sue, Tim, Tom (Brigid), Terry, and Marianne “LuLu.” He was a loving grandfather to Adam (Maddie), Drew (Danny), Mitchel, Maggie, Charlie, Patrick, Matthew, Meaghan, Michael, Katie, Jack, Ryan, Keegan, and Bailey. This year he was blessed with his first great-grandchild, Agatha.
Charlie is survived by his in-laws Val (the late John), Rocky (the late Dorothy) Graziano, Dottie Moore, Pat Moore, Dennis Walle, Jennifer Moore, Michael “Moose” Moore, Mary Helen Moore and Ann Moore. He was preceded in death by his sisters Margaret (Fred) Ruebe, Kathryn (Corky) Chorak, Dorothy Graziano, Alice (Chuck) Iffland, Mary (Wayne) Talaski and his brother John. He was the grumpy uncle loved by many nieces and nephews.
Chuck grew up on the South Side of Chicago, attended Leo High School, Class of ‘58, and spent summer days playing handball and swimming in Lake Michigan. He was a Boy Scout and a U.S. Marine, and he could often be heard humming or whistling the Marines’ Hymn. During his years at Loras College, Class of ‘62, he was a weightlifting champion, holding records that still stand today. He graduated from Illinois Institute of Technology in 1976, having attended night school with eight young children at home.
He met his beloved Kay on spring break in Florida, when her friend Betty gave him a beer. He somehow convinced Kay to build a beautiful family with him; they were married for 63 years. Early on he held the honor of the “Meanest Dad on the Block,” yet all the kids wanted to hang out at his house. Chuck worked long hours as a chemist, spending his free time working around the house, attending many, many events for his kids, and “resting his eyes” in his recliner with a scotch. He timed track events, cheered at wrestling, softball, and volleyball games, and never met a referee he couldn’t argue with while coaching youth soccer. Chuck would freeze the backyard every night of the winter for an ice-skating rink so his kids could enjoy it, even though he never skated.
Chuck and Kay spent time every summer with the family at the cottage on Squaw Lake, where he could be spotted swimming across the lake, paddling the rowboat to the island so the kids could camp overnight, or walking on the sandbar. After his retirement in 2000, they embarked on the new adventure of building their dream house on Squaw Lake. He was very proud to have a place for his family to enjoy for generations to come.
Chuck's unique sense of humor entertained many over the years. He never encountered a problem he didn't have the solution for, and he coined many phrases such as “it depends on how you look at it,” “Yo ga-ga,” “let me put it to you this way,” and “hm hm hm.” He had a refined palate for Cutty Sark and Fleischmann’s, pie warmed up with cheese on it, two-day old cold coffee, or “whatever's not going.”
His great joys in life were relaxing with his wife and family at the cottage, walking his beloved dog Riley, and reading the Wall Street Journal.
Family and friends will gather at Conboy Funeral Home, 10501 W. Cermak Rd, Westchester, IL, on Wednesday, October 28, 2026, for visitation from 3:00-8:00 p.m., and at St. Edmund Church, 188 S.
