Evdoxia
Koumbis
Mar 8, 1932 — Sep 16, 2023
Chicago
Evdoxia Koumbis, a long-time resident of Chicago's North Side passed on 9-16-2023. Beloved wife of the late George V. Koumbis. Loving mother of Basil (Marlene) Koumbis, Anastasia Koumbis and the late Paraskevi (Demetrios) Yannimaras. Proud grandmother of George Koumbis, Kristen Koumbis, Vassilios Yannimaras, and George (Melanie) Yannimaras, as well as her cherished great-grandchildren Mia, Andrianna, Vasili, Cassandra, Anastasia and Amalia. She was the devoted daughter of Vasilios and Evanthia Kirkos. Dear sister of the late Vasiliki (the late Philipi) Duros, Sophia (the late Constantine) Bekiaris, and the late Chris (late Eleftheria) Kirkos. Sister-in-Law of the late Cassandra (late Efthimios) Geannopoulos, the late Androniki Koumbis, the late Thanasis (late Eleni) Koumbis, Elias (Ariadne) Koumbis, and the late Constantine (late Maria) Koumbis. Fond aunt of many nieces and nephews, as well as numerous friends and compatriots from her beloved homeland Northern Epirus, Greece. She arrived in the United States on Columbus Day in 1955 and would raise her family in Chicago, where she worked side by side with her husband at their Mister Donut on Clark Street in the Rogers Park community. She was fierce in her love of the place she came from and remembered her days as a refugee when she was forced to leave her little village of Skoriades and build a life in Ioannina Greece and eventually Chicago. She was devoted to the cause of the human rights of the Greek minority in Northern Epirus and served as the President of the Daughter of Epirus for many years and would gladly bring together hundreds of her closest friends for an amazing dinner-dance experience. Most importantly she was always ready to help families arriving in the United States. She never forgot the experiences of WWII and what led her and her family to leave their homes. If her early life had not been interrupted by war, we believe she could have been an astronaut (in the words of her dear friend Chrysoula)—she was whip smart and intuitive. And she will be deeply missed by all who knew her. All to meet Friday, September 22, 2023 at St. George Greek Orthodox Church, 2701 N. Sheffield, Chicago for Visitation from 9:30 a.m. until time of Funeral Service 10:30 a.m. Interment Elmwood Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations to St. George Greek Orthodox Church appreciated.
