Reverend Luke M. (Joseph) Stano, O.S.M. passed away on February 13, 2025 after a long battle with Parkinson's disease. He was a solemn professed friar and priest in the Order of Friar Servants of Mary (Servites) and lived in retirement at Our Lady of Sorrows Monastery in Chicago before requiring full-time nursing care.
Fr. Luke was born in Detroit, Michigan on February 27, 1936 to Stephen and Johanna (Van Peteghen) Stano. He entered the Servite Order as a postulant at Mater Dolorosa Seminary in Hillside, Illinois, and later completed his novitiate at Mount Saint Philip in Granville, Wisconsin. He made first profession of vows in 1955 and solemn profession on October 5, 1958. He was ordained to the priesthood on May 27, 1961 in Chicago. Following ordination, he was sent to complete post-graduate studies in canon law at the Lateran University in Rome.
Fr. Luke served the Servite Order and Church in many different roles during his sixty-four years in active ministry. He was a vocation director and formator during the challenging years of transition after the Second Vatican Council. He was elected Assistant Provincial for three different terms and also Provincial Councilor for three terms. He ministered as a hospital chaplain in both St. Louis and Chicago for 13 years and served in parish ministry for a combined 21 years in Chicago, Detroit and Southern California. In 2019, Fr. Stano moved to Our Lady of Sorrows Monastery in Chicago for retirement.
Fr. Stano was preceded in death by his parents, Stephen and Johanna, and his brothers Steven, Bernard and Leonard. He is survived by his Servite brothers; sister-in-law Nancy; nieces Cindy, Linda, Deborah, Jane; and nephews Gary and Ronald; along with numerous great nieces and nephews, friends and devoted former parishioners.
Funeral will take place on Saturday, February 22, 2025 at Our Lady of Sorrows Basilica, 3121 W. Jackson Blvd in Chicago. There will be a viewing at 10:00 AM, followed by the Mass of Christian Burial at 11:00 AM. Interment will be at Queen of Heaven Cemetery, Hillside, IL.
