Janice Lee (Jan) Ostendorf, 82, died peacefully on Sunday, April 23, 2023, surrounded by family at home, after a long battle with cancer.

Jan was born on October 9, 1940 to Charles and Gertrude (Zickowski) Gondek in Chicago. After graduating from Five Holy Martyrs grade school and Lourdes High School (1958), she went on to graduate from St. Mary of Nazareth Nursing School in 1961. Her four-decade career as a nurse included service at St. Mary of Nazareth Hospital and twenty-five years at Elmhurst Memorial Hospital where she worked as a floor nurse and I.V. Therapist.

While in nursing school, Jan met her husband Bill via a purposefully-chosen seat (by Jan) that led to a glance in the rearview mirror on the way to a party at his fraternity. Bill's blue eyes and Jan's boundless energy ignited the spark that would lead to four children - Liesl, Kristen, Mark and Rachel - and a lifetime of swim meets, ball games, hand-sewn clothes, school events, church activities and family gatherings. Soon after Jan and Bill moved from Chicago to Westchester, Jan became active in parish life at Divine Providence Catholic Church and School, serving over the years as an RCIA teacher, lector, 25th Anniversary Celebration coordinator, Pre-Cana leader, school volunteer, church decorator, and, most recently, quilter for the parish quilt ministry.

Jan was preceded in death by her mother, Gertrude (Zickowski) Gondek, and father, Charles Gondek. She is survived by her husband, William Ostendorf, and her children Liesl (Tom) Minneci, Kristen (Amy Engebretson) Ostendorf, Mark Ostendorf, and Rachel (Neil Buranakanchana) Ostendorf and her grandchildren Nina Minneci, Anthony (Lizzy) Minneci, Jessica Minneci, Claire Engebretson-Gillman, Michol Ostendorf, Jude Ostendorf, Elizabeth Buranakanchana and Nathan Buranakanchana. She will be missed by countless family and friends.

A Memorial Visitation will be held at Conboy-Westchester Funeral Home, 10501 W. Cermak Road, Westchester on Friday, April 28, 2023 from 3:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. All are asked to meet Saturday, April 29, 2023 at Divine Providence Church, 2550 Mayfair, Westchester for A Mass of Christian Burial at 10:00 am.
