Obituary

Joseph F. Massie of Berkeley, age 82. Beloved husband of Connie A. Massie, nee Jedrychowski; loving father of Christine (Jeff) Steffgen and Carrie (Tim) Saner; proud grandfather of Kaitlyn, Alec, Conrad and Peter; cherished son of the late Joseph and Mary Massie; dear brother of Frank (Kathy) Massie and the late Sandy (late Jim) Hayes; fond uncle and godfather of Joey Hayes. Brother-in-law to Joe Jedrychowski (Phyllis Beemsterboer), Joyce Jedrychowski, and Bob (Sallie) Jedrychowski. Uncle of Jaime (Brian) Melton and Jenny (Matt) Lyons.  Great uncle of Hannah Melton, Liam and Kari Hayes, Jack and Emma Lyons.

A true Chicago boy, Joe was born and raised first on Taylor and Loomis Sts., then on Harrison St. in a 3-flat with his parents, maternal grandparents and his aunt, uncle and cousin. He often spoke of those early memories, as a young boy, going to the nickel theatre to watch cartoons, or later playing street ball or playing in the dug out trench outside their 3-flat which would become the Eisenhower Expressway. He came from a large family with many aunts, uncles and cousins, all of whom were very close. His dad played a most formative role in his life.  In his teens, his family moved to Cicero where he attended J Sterling Morton High School. He loved to dance and was a jitterbug champ at the local rec center. In his late teens he met the love of his life, Connie. They married on February 12, 1966, and not long after moved to Berkeley, Il where they had two girls, Christine and Carrie. Joe started his career at Western Electric and retired an Information Technology Manager at Ameritech.  He was involved in his community as a parishioner at St. Domitilla Church, a Trustee of the Village of Berkeley, and a member of Kiwanis. He took great pride in homeownership. On his watch there was never a leaf or blade of grass out of place. Joe was a loving husband, doting father and grandfather; his world was his wife, daughters, and grandkids. He loved to laugh and make others laugh, he could sing like the crooners he loved and was a master whistler. He could start a conversation with anyone. He loved playing golf, spending time with family and friends, the Chicago Bears, spaghetti and meatballs and a Manhattan, on the rocks, with a twist.
