Lawrence A.
"Larry" Hitzman
Nov 4, 1944 — Jul 31, 2026
Tinley Park
Lawrence A. "Larry" Hitzman, age 81, of Tinley Park, formerly of Brookfield, Illinois, passed away peacefully, surrounded by the love of his family.
Larry was a proud United States Army veteran and the beloved husband of Christine (née Scalise) Hitzman. He was the loving father of Michelle Hitzman. After the heartbreaking loss of his first wife, Patricia A. Hitzman (née Meschi), to leukemia in 1973, Larry devoted himself to raising Michelle as a single father—a role that became one of his life's greatest accomplishments. He was the dear brother of Mary "Cookie" (the late John) Shuper, the late Frederick (Cynthia) Hitzman, and Thomas (Alice) Hitzman. He was a cherished uncle to Ryan Hitzman, Paige (Chris Aarvig) Hitzman, John (Rebecca) Shuper, and Tracy (Bruce) Collier. He will also be deeply missed by his faithful dog, Jingles.
Larry dedicated much of his working life to his craft as a butcher, a profession he genuinely enjoyed and took great pride in. Over the years, he became a familiar face to countless customers, spending many years at County Fair Foods on Western Avenue in Chicago's Beverly neighborhood before concluding his career at Casey's Market in Western Springs.
Known to so many simply as "Dad" and "Grandpa Larry," Larry had a kind heart, a gentle spirit, and a genuine interest in the world around him. An avid reader whose curiosity never faded, he found great joy in learning throughout his life. He especially loved history, with a particular passion for the Civil War, and could often be found with a book in hand. Larry also enjoyed gardening and had a deep appreciation for nature, finding peace in the beauty of the outdoors.
A devoted Chicago Cubs fan, Larry faithfully cheered for his team through every season, celebrating the victories and remaining loyal through the challenges. He and Christine also enjoyed attending performances as season ticket holders to the Southwest Suburban Symphony, sharing a love of music and the arts. During retirement, they spent several happy years living in Branson, Missouri, where Larry embraced the slower pace of life and the natural beauty of the Ozarks before eventually returning to Illinois.
Larry's Catholic faith was the foundation of his life. A devoted and active member of St. George Parish in Tinley Park, he found strength, comfort, and purpose in his faith. Prayer was part of his daily routine, and his quiet devotion was reflected in the compassion, humility, and kindness he extended to everyone he met.
More than anything, Larry treasured the people in his life. His greatest joy was his family, and he was a steady source of love, wisdom, and encouragement. His warmth touched not only those related to him but also many others who affectionately knew him as "Dad" and "Grandpa Larry." He leaves behind a legacy of resilience, compassion, quiet strength, unwavering faith, and steadfast devotion to those he loved. His memory will live on in the countless lives he influenced through his kindness, generosity, and faithful example.
Family and friends are invited to celebrate Larry's life on Monday, August 10, 2026, from 3:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. at Conboy-Westchester Funeral Home, 10501 W. Cermak Road, Westchester. All are asked to meet on Tuesday, August 11, 2026, at St. George Church, 6707 W. 175th Street, Tinley Park for a 10:00 a.m. Funeral Mass. Entombment will follow at Queen of Heaven Cemetery.
The family extends their heartfelt gratitude to everyone who offered prayers, support, and compassion during Larry's illness and in the days following his passing.
He will be deeply loved, forever remembered, and greatly missed.
