Lowell J.
Lucas
Oct 8, 1937 — Mar 6, 2024
Lombard
Lowell Jackson Lucas, 86, of Lombard, Illinois and formerly Streator and Westchester, Illinois, passed away at his residence Wednesday March 6, 2024. He was surrounded by the love of his family both near and far.
Lowell is survived by his children Lora (Dan) Boburka of Glendale Heights, Carin Lucas of Countryside, John (Diane) Lucas of Coppell, Texas, Sara Lucas of Chicago and Elizabeth (Pieter) van Es of Laguna Beach, California; grandchildren Grant (Lauren), Erin, Alyssa (Joe), Matthew (Ashley), Tori, Shannon, Alec, Phoebe and Owen; 8 great grandchildren; brother Wallace Lucas, a niece Dianna Lucas, and two nephews, Shawn Smith and Rob Runyon
Lowell was preceded in death by his wife, Harriet Lucas, his parents, and a sister, Rosemary Smith. Born October 8, 1937 in West Hamlin, WV, Lowell was the youngest child of Ward and Ruth (Wilkerson) Lucas. Lowell graduated from Pattonville HS in St. Louis, MO. He attended Northeast Missouri Teacher's College (Truman State University) where he met Harriet. They were married on March 7, 1958 in Pattonville, Missouri.
Many knew Lowell as "Coach Lucas" from his 25 plus years of teaching and coaching at Proviso West High School. His induction to the Illinois High School Hall of Fame in 1992 recognized the tremendous imprint he made on high school basketball in the greater Chicago area. He was beloved by many as their favorite physical education or driver's education teacher, and/or basketball, baseball or golf coach. Lowell found great joy and fulfillment in the work he did as a coach and teacher.
Lowell's greatest gift was finding the joy in each moment and always being ready with a smile, a laugh and a joke. He was a devoted husband, father and grandfather, who spent countless hours at his children and grandchildren's activities, offering words of encouragement and support. Lowell will be greatly missed by those who knew him, especially by his family.
