Riverside

Obituary

A devoted couple has been reunited in heaven. On April 25, 2026, Maripat Scanlon of Riverside passed away surrounded by her loving family. In passing, Maripat is reunited in heaven with her beloved husband Bill in what must have been a joyous reunion. Together again, they continue their legacy of love that provided such great inspiration to their family. Bill and Maripat had a loving, devoted marriage of 64 years. Maripat was a spirited and passionate person who lived a life filled with love, purpose, and dedication to her family.

Maripat's life was defined by her boundless enthusiasm and zest for living. She approached everything she did with great gusto - whether it was creating adventures for her children to explore art, theater, music, and the city of Chicago; volunteering in the community; having an opinion on any and all topics and sticking to it with conviction; enjoying her many friends; talking about current news and politics; devouring British mystery books; decorating the house for every holiday from Mardi Gras to Christmas and everything in between; planning both the family's annual trips to Door County and her outfits; but especially in doting on her husband Bill and four children.

A graduate of the University of Wisconsin, Maripat taught before her marriage. After her children were grown, she enjoyed a career in real estate and working alongside her husband Bill at Access Benefit Plan Consultants. She was deeply engaged in her community and found joy in volunteering, including starting a volunteer organization at the Brookfield Zoo, volunteering at MacNeal hospital, serving as a director at the Lone Tree Area Girl Scout Council and enthusiastic Girl Scout leader, running the Riverside Community Fund, and serving on the Riverside Plan Commission. She also enjoyed being the Treasurer of the Riverside Garden Club and on the board of the Olmsted Society.

Maripat was the loving mother of Jacqueline (Michael) Lurie, Courtenay (Edward) Erb, Alyson Scanlon, and Blake (Anne) Scanlon. Proud grandmother of Bradford (Samantha) Lurie, Blaire Lurie, Sheridan Lurie, Laramie Scanlon, Colin Scanlon, Nolan Scanlon, Cassidy Erb, and great granddaughter Margot Lurie. Daughter of the late Wilbur and Margaret Higgins (nee Sheridan). Sister of the late John Higgins (Diane) and James Higgins (Rosemary). Sister-in law of Mary Catherine (the late John) Durkin, Noreen (the late Philip) Cherep, the late John D. (Jane) Scanlon, the late Edward "Butch" (the late Colleen) Scanlon, and the late Andrew "Skip" Scanlon. Beloved by many nieces, nephews, and cousins, and a cherished friend to many.
