Mary Frances
Miller
Dec 30, 1927 — Jan 23, 2024
Lemont
Mary Frances Miller (nee Flaherty), born December 30, 1927, and raised on a farm in Davenport, Iowa, died January 23, 2024. She was 96 years old. Mary is survived by James, her devoted husband of 72 years. She was the mother of James (Barb Symons), Paul (Sally Meyer), Mary Beth Ocasek (Tim), Susan McCarthy (Kevin), Trisha Dooley (Mike), Tom (Gail Richman), Matthew (Jo Smith). She was the proud grandmother of 19 and great-grandmother of 3. Mary also leaves a sister, Patricia Sterling (late Cal) and brother, Mark (Judy) Flaherty, and many nieces and nephews. Mary was preceded in death by her beloved parents, Dorothy (nee Cawiezel) and William Flaherty, her brothers, John (Betty) Flaherty and Bill (Annabelle) Flaherty.
Mary was always a hard worker. One of her first jobs was piping in the cream at a Twinkie factory, memorable to her because that's where she was when she learned of the attack on Pearl Harbor. She graduated from Marquette University College of Nursing in 1950. She was fearless in life and nursing. Mary worked with AIDS patients very early in the epidemic. She was prolific in her career working at many hospitals, was hand-picked for one of the first coronary care units in the Chicago area, and taught nursing. Mary continued to work as a nurse well into her 80s. Mary loved nursing but loved her family even more. She will be deeply missed.
