Peter John
Vlahos
Mar 24, 1952 — Aug 31, 2026
Hinsdale
Peter John Vlahos, age 74, a resident of Hinsdale, Illinois, passed away in comfort on August 31, 2026, surrounded by his family, friends and the love of his life, Sophia, after a valiant decade battle with dementia.
Peter was our Man of Steel. Devoted husband of Sophia (Haralampopoulos) Vlahos, whom he married on July 4, 1976; beloved father of John Vlahos (Lindsay), Penelope Vlahos, Dean Vlahos (Nicole); adored Papou to Agapi, George, Elena, Peter, Stelios, Teddy, Sophia; devoted son of the late John and Penelope (Maggos) Vlahos; loving brother to Georgjean Caras (Danny), Kathy Miller (George), Christina Vlahos, the late Dean Vlahos; loving brother-in-law to Bobby Haralampopoulos (Alexandra), the late George Haralampopoulos (Jean); beloved uncle, cousin, koumbaro, friend to countless others.
Peter was raised in Chicago and later moved to Oak Brook, Illinois. He graduated from the University of Illinois where he majored in Accounting and Finance and proudly passed the Certified Public Accountant exam on his first attempt. Soon after marriage, Peter and Sophia moved to Hinsdale where they raised their three children. Peter was devoted to his faith and served on the Assumption Greek Orthodox Parish Council as Vice President of Finance for 20 years.
Peter was passionate about many things, including Led Zeppelin music, his Monday night basketball games, tending to his beautiful yard, vacations planned around scuba diving, cheering on his kids and grandkids during their sporting events, caring for his unique aquarium of fish, providing endless food for the hundreds of birds who visited his yard, weekly dinner club outings with Sophia and friends and being Superman to many.
Peter didn’t say a lot. He didn’t have to. When he did speak, you listened because there was a good chance that whatever came next would be funny or important. Peter had a dry sense of humor and a gift for the perfectly timed one-liners. He could say more with five words and a raised eyebrow than most people could say in five minutes.
As a CPA and a real estate developer, Peter spent his career working hard, quietly solving problems and building things. He wasn’t flashy. He wasn’t loud. He didn’t have to be the center of attention. He was steady. He was funny. He was loyal. He was a man of integrity. He was someone you could trust.
Although Peter’s life was unfairly shortened by Alzheimer’s, the disease does not define the life he lived. He lived a full and meaningful life, surrounded by the love of his family, devoted to his work and filled with passions, adventures, friendships and memories that will endure. Above all, Peter was deeply loved, and his greatest legacy will be the family he built, the lives he touched and the love he gave so freely.
The family extends its heartfelt gratitude to all those who walked alongside Peter throughout his journey with Alzheimer’s. Their compassion, care, friendship and support will always be remembered and cherished.
