Ralph "Ray"
Edward Chase
Jul 14, 1952 — Jun 9, 2026
Hillside
After decades of late nights, grand openings, and more soft launches than I can count, I've finally made my exit on June 9th, 2026. I worked and played hard and always said, "I can rest when I'm dead." Every life has a story, and I'd like to tell you a little about mine.
I, Ralph (Ray) Edward Chase, was born on July 14, 1952, in Oak Park, IL, to the late Louis and Dolores Chase (Crowley). I was an only child, and my parents divorced when I was very young. I decided as a young man to learn the arts of Aikido and Taekwondo, and I eventually became a 6th‑degree black belt. The disciplines taught me balance and resilience, and helped me survive more than a few bar fights. I grew up in Maywood, IL, and graduated from Proviso West High School.
Because of my love of music, I started one of Chicago's first mobile DJ services and later became a DJ at a local radio station in Atlanta. I then worked for Marriott Hotels, living out of airplanes and hotel rooms while opening locations across the country. From there, I managed many nightclubs and bars — Kicks on 66, Snuggery, Rupert's for Steaks, Doc Weeds, Meanwhile, Excalibur — and eventually became Director of Marketing for Jilly's Entertainment Group. Along the way, I had the pleasure of meeting celebrities, athletes, dignitaries, and worked with incredible people. The truth is, after a while I learned that everyone puts their pants on one leg at a time.
I met the love of my life and best friend, Rikki Bober, in South Bend, Indiana. When she moved to the Chicagoland area, our friendship bloomed into the most meaningful relationship of my life. I told anyone with a set of ears how wonderful she is and how she saved my life. We loved being in nature and were always active biking, horseback riding, camping and hiking. The hospitality business kept us on our feet, and getting home when the sun came up was not unusual. Our animals were our "kids," and they filled our home with joy, comfort, and unconditional love.
There will be no funeral or memorial service. After working years in hospitality, I've organized enough events to last several lifetimes. Consider yourself off the hook — you won't have to sit through another long, drawn‑out story. I had plenty, and I loved sharing them with anyone who would listen. Remember me with a smile, tell one of my stories, spoil your pet, and toast a drink my way if I cross your mind.
As for me, I've moved on to a place where the service and food are excellent, all pets are welcome, the stories never end, and nobody is sick or in pain. Thank you for being part of my journey. It was an honor to know you.
A note from Rikki: Thank you for 34 years of love, friendship, adventures and endless conversations. You changed me, made me stronger, and I'll carry you and your stories with me always.
Arrangements entrusted to Chris J. Balodimas, Funeral Director. For info 708-F-U-N-E-R-A-L.
