Robert "Bob"
John Mondo, Sr.
Nov 23, 1940 — Jan 4, 2026
Westchester formerly of Oakbrook
Robert "Bob" John Mondo, Sr. of Westchester formerly of Oakbrook, age 85. Beloved husband of Karen (née Rojek); a devoted father to Robert John Mondo Jr. and Gia (Daniel) Kunkel; and a proud and loving grandfather to Robert Francis (Téa) Mondo, Joseph Mondo, Jake Kunkel, and Peyton Kunkel. He was the dear son of the late Salvatore and Angela (née Romano), and a wonderful brother-in-law, uncle, and cousin to many who will miss him dearly.
Born in Chicago, Bob grew up in River Forest and Oak Park, spending his formative years surrounded by close-knit friendships that have endured to this day. He was a standout Little League baseball player, setting a record for the most home runs in a single game, and could often be found running the neighborhood streets with his friends. At Oak Park and River Forest High School, Bob thrived as a three-sport athlete, earning multiple honors and college scholarships.
Bob attended Furman University in Greenville, South Carolina, where he emerged as a standout athlete. The Chicago Tribune famously dubbed him "The Beast That Roamed the South." During his college years, Bob forged lifelong friendships with his teammates, bonds he valued for the rest of his life.
After college, Bob returned to River Forest, where he discovered a true passion for coaching. For many years, he dedicated himself to mentoring young athletes, leaving a lasting impact on countless lives. It was also during this time that he stepped into one of the most meaningful roles of his life, a loving father. Bob also found a love for golf, revealing a hidden talent that would become a lifelong pursuit.
For decades, Bob cherished time spent with family and friends at his parents' home in Waupaca, Wisconsin, creating countless memories snowmobiling, canoeing, and boating. After meeting his wife, Karen, Bob embraced a life filled with travel and adventure. Together, they explored the world and spent treasured time at their homes in Arizona. An avid golfer, Bob played as many courses as he could and proudly won the Nicklaus Cup Tournament.
Bob possessed a larger-than-life personality and truly lived life to the fullest. He greeted everyone with a warm smile and treated each person as if they were lifelong friends. He will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege of knowing and loving him.
