William A. Scanlon of Riverside, formerly of the South Deering neighborhood in Chicago, passed away peacefully surrounded by his family. Beloved and devoted husband of Maripat (nee Higgins) Scanlon. Loving father of Jacqueline (Michael) Lurie, Courtenay (Edward) Erb, Alyson Scanlon, and Blake (Anne) Scanlon. Proud grandfather of Bradford (Samantha) Lurie, Blaire Lurie, Sheridan Lurie, Laramie Scanlon, Colin Scanlon, Nolan Scanlon, Cassidy Erb, and his great granddaughter Margot Lurie. Devoted son of the late William B. and the late Catherine (nee Fitzgerald) Scanlon. Dear brother of Mary Catherine (the late John) Durkin, Noreen (the late Philip) Cherep, the late John D. (Jane) Scanlon, the late Edward "Butch" (the late Colleen) Scanlon, and the late Andrew "Skip" Scanlon. Beloved by many nieces, nephews, and cousins, and a cherished friend to many.
More than anything, Bill treasured time spent with his family. Whether gathered around the table sharing stories, enjoying one another's company, or hearing the latest news about his grandchildren, those were the moments that brought him his greatest joy. Nothing meant more to Bill than the annual family trips to Door County, Wisconsin.
Bill was a respected community member where he held many leadership roles: Former Trustee for the Village of Riverside, Past Chairman of the Riverside Economic Development Commission, Past President of the Riverside Township Lions Club (where he was awarded the Man of the Year Award), Past President of the Riverside Community Fund/United Way, a Board of Director for the Riverside Olmstead Society, and a Board of Director for the Lone Tree Area Girl Scout Council. Bill owned and founded his own business, Access Benefit Plan Consultants, which he ran successfully for many years. Bill was a veteran of the U.S. Marine Corps. He was a lifelong fan of the Chicago Bears, Chicago White Sox, and Fighting Illini Football.
Family and friends will be received at the Conboy-Westchester Funeral Home, 10501 W. Cermak Rd., Westchester (2 blks West of Mannheim Rd.) on Friday November 28, 2025 from 3:00pm until 8:00pm. Funeral Saturday 10:15am from the funeral home to St. Mary Church in Riverside for a Mass at 11:00am. (the mass will be live streamed - please click on the watch video below). Interment Private. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Bill's memory to Riverside Township Lions Club. Arrangements entrusted to the Original Kuratko Family, Brian D. Kuratko, Funeral Director.
